This light lasted only minutes and then was gone. I think some clouds cleared briefly to the west revealing this light. Thank goodness I was all set up and shooting periodically as the sun was going down.

Testing out my new Nikon 135mm F/2 DC, I used little Gi as my reluctant model. This was manually focused shot at F4 with the DC set to R 5.6. Very nice bokeh. I don't know how it will compare with my 85mm F//1.4. I'll have to spend some time someday to check. I'm interested in starting to make portraits, and my NAS has led me to acquire a little collection of primes to play with.

This is a 2-shot vertical panorama so I could maximize the detail with my 105mm macro. Just as I was adjusting focus on the shot of the lower half, this bee came in for a landing. Bugs are everywhere when I do flower macros. There really is another world at this scale. In fact, there is a insect crawling at 2 o'clock between two petal veins close to the center.

This is a platycodon, a rather unpleasant name for this little perennial that is great for cottage gardens or borders. Its closed petals form a beautiful little balloon before they open each day. My wife assigned me to document this blossom; otherwise, I would have never made this fun capture.

A postcard picture: "moonbow" at Lower Yosemite Fall. The challenge is to be there when a full moon rises just at the right angle on the horizon to allow the physics of the rainbow to occur. This was taken just before 1 am. The sky had been overcast for the preceding 3 nights, the first of which would have been optimal. The moon rises about one hour later each night and the angle shifts so the rainbow seems to move to the right. The mist can be a real problem, especially with long exposures. This night was pretty good, mist never reaching the lens, but obscuring detail at the fall's base.

Our human eyes don't see the 'bow as well as the camera, since we use our B&W rods mostly at night. I could barely perceive the ghostly colors in the moonlight.

This is a panorama of 4 shots, top to bottom, merged in PTGui. It is hard to believe how the image looks so much like daylight, but, I guess, moonlight is just reflected "daylight."

Ghost Coyote and Ansel Adam's Oak Tree, Yosemite

It was my friend Barry's idea to lightpaint the tree Ansel Adam's chose for his Oak Tree, Snowstorm image.. I was ready to pack it in for an early morning shoot. I had brought along my Black and Decker VEC157BD 2 Million Power Series 1365 Lumens Spotlight for just such an occasion, but always had some excuse, such as sleeping, to avoid using it.
Barry persisted and was the "painter of light." I was the human-powered remote bulb shutter controller.

As we were painting, a young coyote strolled into the frame. If you look closely, you can another ghost-like image to the left of the more visible "ghost" image. Barry shined the light on the coyote, hoping to divert it from me. But the coyote could have cared less about this scenario and ambled by me into the night unperturbed.

The magic of reflected light is all over Yosemite. Our visual system at a very low level filters out most of the blue that is all around us. The camera sees this blue and records it. I left this image the way the camera sees. Vision and Art: The Biology of Seeing by Margaret Livingstone is a fascinating explanation why we can never see the world like a camera records it. Taken last month from the meadow below, this ribbon of water streaming down the face of El Capitan was memorialized by Galen Rowell's famous 1973 photo of it burning red at sunset.

Clouds again--another miracle in SoCal. Some visitors from out of state spotted me packing up my camera gear, parked a ways down from me, and walked up to where I had been shooting, I presume, to see what I thought was so great to capture. This isn't exactly a particularly scenic part of our neighborhood. I had been trying to get some dramatic cloud/tree compositions up on top. I just have this thing about single trees, clouds, and sky. Well, it turns out I like this one the best today. Hope you do too.
